Practice Services

Contraceptive Advice
The practice nurse and all the doctors are qualified to give contraceptive advice. Please make a routine appointment with your usual GP. Unfortunately we are presently unable to provide a service for fitting intra-uterine contraceptive devices and suggest contacting the Family Planning Clinic at Dean Terrace, on Tel: 0131 315 4874

Maternity Care
Cramond surgery has one attached midwife who works within a larger team of midwives and is based at Pennywell Resource Centre (tel: 0131 537 4251). The midwife runs an Antenatal Clinic at Cramond Surgery regularly as well a shared care service for pregnant ladies in association with the rest of the Health CareTeam and Obstetric Services. "Preparation for Birth and Parenthood" classes are held by the midwife and health visitors locally. To find out more about these classes contact the midwife or health visitors. If you are pregnant, initially make and appointment with your GP to access this service

Cervical Smears
These can be taken by the Practice Nurse or by your GP. We recommend that women between the ages of 20 and 60 have a cervical smear every three years. You will be informed by a standardised letter from NHS Scotland when your smear is due. Please make an appointment to see a Practice Nurse or GP, making sure that you arrange your appointment when you are in mid-cycle.

Nursing Services
The Practice Nurses and their team see patients by appointment in the surgery. Their work includes dressings, blood tests, stitch removal, ear syringing, first aid, immunisation and cervical smears. There are also clinics for Asthma, Coronary Heart Disease and Diabetes and Smoking Cessation. The Practice Nurses can give full information on travel vaccination requirements - please contact them at least six weeks before foreign travel in case a course of vaccines is required. The practice is a designated Yellow Fever Vaccine Centre.
We have a Health Care Assistant (HCA) who works with the nurses and their responsibilities include taking blood samples, blood pressure monitoring and new patient registration checks.

District Nursing Services
The District Nursing team are based in the Cramond Surgery. They can be contacted directly on Tel: 0131 336 4468; daily 8.00am - 4.00pm; an answering machine is available if the district nurses are out on calls. This tape is answered at regular intervals during the day. For emergencies after 4.30pm call NHS 24 on 08454 242424.

Care by Evening and Night Nursing Service is arranged by the District Nurses at Cramond Surgery. The District Nurses visit patients in their own homes and assess their healthcare needs, providing and co-ordinating a holistic and quality-driven service to patients within the Practice. They work closely with carers, GPs, hospitals, hospice services, Social Work, Physiotherapy and Podiatry Services.

The district nursing team would be happy to discuss any further details about the community nursing service in the North West locality of Edinburgh.

Physiotherapy Services
Lothian Health provides a comprehensive community and hospital based physiotherapy service and encourages self referral for simple problems or the recurrence of a previous problem. A self referral form is available to download as a PDF document.

Medical Education and Research
This is a training practice and each year we have a fully qualified doctor attached to the practice to gain experience in general practice. New Patient Registration

We are happy to register new patients who live within our practice boundary area. In order to undertake the registration process we require you to complete a questionnaire and have a brief health check. Additionally you are required to provide two forms of identification. Our registration form is available to download as a PDF document or a Word document. You should then hand in this document to the Surgery, making an appointment with our staff to have a Health Check at a future time that is convenient to yourself.

Adobe Reader To view the PDF document you will need Adobe Reader. You can download this free from Adobe.

Results

If investigations are arranged by the doctor, it is essential that you understand how to obtain your results. An enquiry to reception will tell you if the result is available and whether or not you need to speak to the doctor again. Results are available by telephone daily between 2.00 - 4.00pm.

Appointments

We operate an appointment system, to minimise waiting time and improve convenience for patients. Appointments are available between 8.30am and 5.30pm, Monday to Friday.

There are two methods for making an appointment:

Telephoning the surgery from 8.00am week days, on telephone number (0131) 336 5432. Please note that all nurse appointments e.g. blood tests, blood pressures, diabetic reviews may only be made by telephone. You are free to consult with any doctor in the Practice.

. Please try to book an appointment one week in advance if possible
. Patients with urgent problems will always be seen that day, although if there are no routine appointments available you may be asked to attend at the end of a surgery
. Please cancel an appointment if you are unable to attend the surgery
. Please make separate appointments for each person who requires to be seen
. If you feel that you require a longer appointment, please inform the receptionist who will try to provide you with a double appointment as necessary.

Online via a new 24 hour online system, to book appointments with our GPs. After initial registration, this new system will allow patients to book, cancel or check appointments on the web, whatever the time of day and be sent immediate confirmation of the booking.

Online Service - Getting Started

It will be necessary initially for you to register to use the internet appointment booking facility. Ask the receptionist for a registration form (one registration form for each adult and child, 6 yrs and over, in the household), which provides the information you need to register to use the internet facility.
Once the registration process is complete, you can log onto the appointments system using your individual patient identifying number and password, and be able to view appointments you have already made, cancel them if necessary, and book an appointment with your doctor after checking the times available.
This system is fully encrypted ensuring access to a remote highly secure site managed by EMIS, not at the practice, so there is no possibility of unauthorised access to clinical data. If you have received you personal user name and password please CLICK HERE .

Repeat Prescriptions

If you are on regular treatment you will be given a computer sheet listing your medicines. Repeat prescriptions can be ordered by ticking items required and handing it into Reception or posting the slip to the Surgery with a stamped addressed envelope for reply or by telephoning our dedicated repeat prescription phone line 336 0022 between 11:00am - 12:00pm. Please allow 2 working days for the prescription to be prepared. Our local chemists offer an ordering and collection service for the completed prescriptions. Please inform the receptionist if you wish to use this.
If the medicine you require is not on your repeat medication list then you may have to see a Doctor to obtain this. At intervals you may be asked to speak to your Doctor for review of your routine medicines.

Fees for Private Work

Some types of certificates and medical examinations are not covered by the National Health Service. We use the guidance of the British Medical Association to set these fees.
Such certificates include private medical insurance reports, holiday cancellation certificates and fitness to drive certification. Certain travel vaccines are not provided by the NHS and a charge is levied for their administration.
